This one’s a little different!
When my brother’s girlfriend bought him a Bird of Prey experience day at The Falconry Centre, Hagley last year, he asked if I could join them as his ‘official photographer’ to capture it all for him! The variety of birds that James got to hold during the day was so impressive, from the tiny kestrel at the start, right up to a golden eagle at the end. We spent part of the day in a local woodland where the falconer released a Harris Hawk into the trees – the hawk followed us as we walked, swooping through all the branches from tree to tree. We ended up at the bottom of a hill that the falconer walked up with the bird, whilst James stood at the bottom holding some food in his (gloved) hand – soon enough the hawk hopped off the falconer’s hand at the top and slid all the way down the slope, just a couple of inches from the ground the whole time, and finally up onto the food in James’ hand! It was incredible to see and I don’t know how James managed to stay rooted – I’m sure my instincts would have told me to flee…!
If you’re a fan of birds, I really recommend you give this day a go! The falconer was so informative, full of jokes (!) and made the whole day enjoyable even for the spectators. The birds of course stole the show & I thoroughly enjoyed chasing them around with my camera for the day (obviously with my shutter speeds cranked up much higher than normal…!). Big shout out to James for taking me along for the day, I think his girlfriend should get some big ‘GF Points’ for this one!!
Here’s just a small slice of the many many many photos I took of the day…
